Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the recovery process of orthopedic patients, particularly after surgeries such as joint replacements or fracture repairs (Ogunmola et al., 2023). Physiotherapy interventions aim to restore movement, reduce pain, and improve the overall quality of life by promoting mobility and strength (Lazarus et al., 2024). However, adherence to physiotherapy recommendations often presents a significant challenge, with many patients failing to follow prescribed rehabilitation plans, leading to prolonged recovery times and potential complications (Oduwole et al., 2023).
In Kano State, where orthopedic surgery rates are increasing, understanding the factors that hinder adherence to physiotherapy is essential for improving recovery outcomes. Factors influencing adherence may include lack of patient education, financial constraints, insufficient communication with healthcare providers, and cultural or psychological barriers (Chinedu et al., 2023). This study will investigate the barriers to adherence to physiotherapy recommendations among orthopedic patients in Kano State, aiming to identify the specific factors that contribute to non-adherence.
Non-adherence to physiotherapy recommendations is a prevalent issue among orthopedic patients, resulting in delayed recovery and the possibility of complications such as muscle weakness, joint stiffness, and reduced function (Ogunlaja et al., 2024). Despite the importance of physiotherapy in post-operative recovery, there is little research on the specific barriers to adherence in Kano State hospitals. Identifying and addressing these barriers is essential for improving patient outcomes and ensuring that orthopedic patients fully benefit from their rehabilitation programs.
This study will focus on orthopedic patients in Kano State hospitals, assessing the barriers to adherence to physiotherapy recommendations. Limitations include the potential for patient self-reporting biases and the focus on a specific region, which may not reflect adherence challenges in other parts of Nigeria.
